Coromandel Hot Pools
The Hot Pools of the Coromandel Peninsula
The Coromandel hills were formed hundreds of millions of years ago in a maelstrom of tilting earth blocks, earthquakes, fracture lines oozing fiery lavas, boiling pools and gushing steam. The fiery lavas helped build up gold and silver deposits, some of which are being mined today and the steam and hot water has moderated and become a unique set of Hot Pools for the enjoyment of the holidaymaker!
Do the Hot Pools Tour – Summer and Winter
If you are coming from Auckland or the Auckland International Airport the best starting point is the Miranda Pools (less than one hour from the Airport) refer map then head south to Te Aroha, on to Athenree then up the east coast to Hot Water Beach and Whitianga. It's good summer and winter!
Miranda Hot Pools
The large pool at Miranda is claimed to be the largest outdoor thermal mineral pool in the southern hemisphere. The smaller spa pool at 38-42 degrees melts stress away and there are private spa pools and a warm, shallow pool for toddlers. The complex has qualified lifeguards, a shop for refreshments and children's playground with a jumping pillow.
Miranda Holiday Park Hot Pools
The holiday park is modern and well equipped with a range of accommodation options. The park has a large pool of its own with temperatures maintained between 36°C and 39°C. The nicely landscaped pool area has a waterfall and is partially shaded from the weather. And it's FREE if you're a guest!
The holiday park is situated right next door to the Miranda Hot Pools.
The Unique Te Aroha Hot Pools
The translation of the Maori name is 'The Place of Love' and the flowing, naturally hot soda water has made it a favourite place since history began. The well maintained hot pools in the Te Aroha Domain with the original Edwardian spa buildings are a highlight of the entire region. The naturally hot, theraputic soda water is unique to Te Aroha.
The Domain also includes a free, hot, foot bath for trampers and walkers (make new friends as you soak those tired feet) and the Mokena Geyser which is the world's only hot water soda geyser.
Te Aroha Leisure Pools
The Leisure Pools, in a natural bush setting, include a 20 metre pool, an outdoor spa, a toddlers pool and you can try the water - there's a drinking fountain too! The soothing thermal soda spring waters that flow into the No.2 Bath House are renowned for providing relief from skin conditions, rheumatism and arthritis. It is popular with groups who book regularly for a therapeutic bathe in its soothing waters.
Te Aroha Hot Spas
Indulge your senses with an aromatherapy bath - add your chosen oils to one of two freshly filled old fashioned claw foot slipper baths and, side by side with a friend slip into a state of total rejuvenation! Then check out the spa therapies.
Or treat your loved one to our Romance Package which includes a spa for 2 in a candlelit room, chocolates, drinks and a lovely rose – mmm!
Athenree Hot Springs and Holiday Park
These pools are within the Holiday Park grounds. All ages are welcome in the large pool but it's adults only in the small hotter pool, sorry kids. There is a constant flow of the pure, soft water which feels wonderful to the skin. Both pools are drained and scrubbed every evening so we can guarantee you will always find them spotlessly clean. For your safety the pools are monitored with a security camera. Opening hours are 8.30am – 7.30pm and the pools are FREE if you are staying at the park.
Hot Water Beach
Hot Water Beach is a new experience – dig a personal hole in the warm beach sand, it will quickly fill with hot water then settle in for a hot mineral water spa bath! It's good fun summer and winter, but plan your day - the spa area is only uncovered when the tide is out. The hot water only happens near the rocky outcrop a short distance up the beach from the carpark. Spades for digging your pool are available at most accommodation places or at the beach shop.
WARNING! - Swimming in the sea at Hot Water Beach can be dangerous - do not swim in the surf unless you are a good swimmer!
The Lost Spring Whitianga
The Lost spring is a unique geothermal water and spa experience with sculpted pools and rocks, hidden gemstones and soothing waterfalls. Relax in thermal pools of crystal clear water from 644m down. Explore the remarkable grounds with lush New Zealand and tropical plants then revitalize with a variety of treatments in the exquisite Day Spa. Sorry, no kids - admission is restricted to children 14 years old and over.
